The Way We Turn

CLARISA ARAGÓN & JONATHAN SAAVEDRA

Collection containing 13 lessons with lifetime access | Turns are like invisible rituals. They have something cathartic, mystical, even sacred to them. They are the same and different every time. Turns in tango symbolize the most perfect geometrical figure of them all - the circle - and yet, when we perform them, we draw with our feet on the floor, a very different geometry. We step on imperfect squares, or triangles. With Turns, it feels like working on something where there’s no moment of perfection, where you’re always changing things and tweaking things, like you don’t have to finish it and deliver it. You can play with Turns forever…

Why this

Turns or Giros are an essential part of tango dancing. The Giro is one of the most challenging elements by itself, but it also represents a playground and a base for making even more complex figures, like Lapiz, Sacada or Enrosque. And only imagine when you add different dynamics and speeds to all this! Turns rely on a delicate, yet powerful equilibrium for which a strong individual technique is required. With this collection, you’ll be working and practicing everything needed for powerful and comfortable Turns, as well as tweaking other tango elements you can build upon Turns.

Preparing for Circular Movements: Spirals & the Space Inside the Embrace14.50 min

Now that you have the knowledge to build a solid base for your tango, let’s start working on slightly more difficult movements. And the first step is to deconstruct the concept of Embrace. As you already know, the Embrace in tango is an extremely important and complex communication vehicle between partners. In this lesson, we’ll focus on the space inside the Embrace, and the three axis the tango couple works with: the axis of the follower, the axis of the leader, and the shared axis that resides in the space inside the Embrace.

Introduction into the Turn (Giro)13.07 min

The Turn or the Giro is one of the complex structures in tango, because it requires a well balanced coordination and interconnectedness, as well as being really stable in our own axis. And Giro is part of the fundamentals we need to master. We have previously worked on the concepts of dissociation and pivot, which are stepping stones towards a comfortable and powerful Giro. In this lesson, we’ll be organizing the directions inside the Giro, and how to start to turn.

Diving Deeper into the Turn: the Dissociation14.26 min

Let’s dive deeper into the technique of Giro, and refine the concept of dissociation. A correctly made dissociation is one of the things that will assure you have a well balanced individual axis, which you need for a Giro that feels oh so good! Clarisa and Jonathan love working with metaphors in order to make learning tango a richer experience. In this lesson you’ll also use some visualization to strengthen your balance and stability.

Introduction into the Sacada14.11 min

Sacada is a tango element that will bring a certain something to your Giro. It requires an extra stable axis and a lot of confidence - in yourself when you play the role of the leader, and in your partner when you play the role of the follower. In this lesson, you’ll learn its secrets. And if you want to make sure you really master a movement, when studying it, practice it really slowly.

Preparing for the Enrosque. Exercises for Confortable Pivoting15.24 min

Here comes the moment for getting ready for the holy grail of the spectacular in social tango - the Enrosque. One of the most challenging elements of them all which, when you get to really master, you feel like you can accomplish anything. In order to perform the Enrosque you need to be able to pivot like a god. On your own. Without any external help. Practice the exercises in this lesson as many times as possible, because they will be essential later on.

The Importance of Working with our Back12.36 min

You already know that the Embrace is one of the most important means of communication in tango. When we say Embrace, we tend to think about the chest. However, focusing on the chest only, cuts away a lot of possibilities for us when dancing. Paying attention to our backs adds up one more communication channel between us and our partner. And like in life, in tango too, a better communication gives us more chances to co-create the outstanding.

The time has come to complete the puzzle, and finally do the Turn we’ve been preparing for so long. Before diving into the lesson, just a quick reminder: don’t depend on your partner to pivot.

Tips for a More Powerful Pivot14.03 min

The fact that Clarisa & Jonathan decided to dedicate an entire lesson to the concept of Pivot, speaks loudly about its importance in tango. Pivot can be essential, useful, necessary, or supporting your creative expression, depending on the moment and way you do it. That is why deconstructing the Pivot, understanding it to its core, and master it is paramount. You’ll do it in this lesson.

Creating a Tango Step, using Everything We Learned Until Now: Turn, Sacada, Enrosque11.12 min

We have previously mentioned that the Turn is part of the foundational tango figures, because we have the option to build upon it and inside it other figures, that we can use in order to spice up our dance or express ourselves in a more extensive way. In this lesson, we’ll have the chance to edify a beautiful construction over our Giro foundation, while learning how to take care of all the technical details we need, for it to be solid.

And we’ll add that tango is full of magical tools that improve skills for life itself. In this lesson, you’ll see how you can use Rebound to navigate a crowded milonga dance floor.

Tango Elements: The Famous Lapiz 113.24 min

When watching a tango show, we usually see such elements as Turn, Enrosque and Lapiz performed together, and we might be under the impression that Enrosque and Lapiz form one tango figure. But we’re talking about two separate elements here. So what is the main concept of the Lapiz? Watch the lesson and find out…

Tango Elements: The Famous Lapiz 210.11 min

In the previous lesson on Lapiz, we started understanding how we lead it, the role of a good posture and the work of the axis. In this lesson, we’ll go with more creative and playful endeavors implying the Lapiz. Lapiz is a tango element that can be performed by both partners in synchronicity or not. But any of these scenarios need to be well communicated, organized and harmonized between partners.
